Launch of the Education and Disability Working Group

On Friday 15 August 2014, a new working group on Education and Disability (EDWG) was launched during a meeting of interested stakeholders at Micasa Hotel in Yangon.

In light of the post-2015 global development agenda, and current education reform process in Myanmar, which are predicated on the key principles of equity and inclusion, it is timely to establish a working group on Education and Disability. Myanmar signed the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities in 2012. Currently the government is developing a national law for implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which will include education rights and a number of education laws are also under development.

The purpose of the EDWG is to provide a platform for coordination, learning, advocacy and joint action for organisations working on education and disability in Myanmar.

The working group will be open to all organisations with an interest in education for children, youth and adults with disabilities, especially Disabled People’s Organisations and government and other non-government partners. Efforts will be made support inclusive participation in all aspects of the functioning of the group, for example wheelchair access, sign language for hearing impaired members.

The group will be co-chaired by Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) and the Myanmar Education Consortium (MEC) and will meet on a monthly basis.
