The National Workshop on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in education was held in Naypidaw on 22 and 23 December 2014.
The workshop was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education (MoE) of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the Disaster Preparedness and Response Education Working Group (DPRE WG), Education and Disability Working Group (EDWG) and the School Construction Working Group (SCWG).
The objective of the workshop was to ensure that Myanmar’s progress on comprehensive school safety is effectively reflected and furthered through the ongoing education reform, in particular the National Education Sector Plan (NESP).
- To foster dialogue and collaboration between key ministries, and with development partners on comprehensive school safety;
- To share achievements and key lessons learnt from Myanmar’s experience in mainstreaming DRR in education;
- To identify concrete ways in which the Ministry of Education can implement a comprehensive school safety approach for all.
Workshop participants included officials from different relevant government ministries and departments as well as INGOs, local civil society organisations, UNICEF and UNESCO.
MEC, The Leprosy Mission Myanmar and Eden School represented the EDWG during the workshop and presented recommendations on making the Comprehensive School Safety Framework in the NESP inclusive for children with disabilities. The complete list of recommendations can be found here.
